Have you not seen that it is God to whom all the beings in the earth bow themselves down - and so too the sun and the moon and the stars and the mountains and the trees and the beasts? Qur'an 22:18 |
Taqwa Eco-Food was created in 2001 to respond to the demands in the Muslim and non-Muslim communities for halal (lawful food produced in a lawful way), tayyib (wholesome food produced in a wholesome way) and dhabiha (the Islamic procedure for slaughtering that is comparable to kosher) meat. Taqwâ is an Arabic term that is commonly defined as “God-consciousness.” In a practical sense, taqwâ is a mindful fear of God, which incorporates the notions of seeking those things which lead to God’s pleasure and love, while avoiding those things which may lead to His displeasure. Our Taqwa cooperative seeks to draw God’s pleasure and love by supporting high ethical standards in the raising of livestock and poultry. Islam holds the position that spreading corruption in the earth includes polluting the Earth, denaturing animals, creating poverty and spreading conflict. Any action that harms life, destroys life or corrupts that which is required for life (like water) is unlawful. We are dedicated to sustainability and have formed relationships with small, local farmers that are committed to engendering ethical principles in their treatment of animals and the environment. A cooperative is the best way, we at Taqwa Eco-Food believe, to embody the principles and tools for moral economics. We are a community-owned business focused on promoting local economic development and sustainable communities. This outlook is shared by many faiths. Therefore, interfaith is the nature of our business and co-op. While our animals are slaughtered solely by qualified Muslims, the people who support our business come from all different faiths and walks of life. Our cooperative serves four communities: consumers, food production workers, animals, and the environment. The cooperative secures high-quality products by ensuring that animals are raised on farms where they are treated respectfully, fed only a natural diet free from antibiotics and hormones, and slaughtered humanely and according to Islamic principles. Faith in Place created Taqwa in 2001. Faith in Place gives religious people the tools to become good stewards of the earth. They partner with religious congregations to promote clean energy and sustainable farming. Since 1999, they have worked with more than 140 congregations in Illinois--Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Baha’i, Zoroastrian and Unitarian. They continue to promote the co-op and support our efforts. For
